Is there any treatment that can save an infected palm?

Oxytetracycline trunk injections can slow disease progression and keep a palm alive, but this requires injections every 4 months indefinitely — if treatment stops, the phytoplasma re-establishes and the palm dies. This is only practical for individual landscape palms. For plantations, removal and replanting with resistant varieties is the only sustainable approach.

How did Jamaica lose its coconut palms?

Lethal yellowing arrived in Jamaica in the 1960s and by the 1990s had killed an estimated 90% of the island's Jamaica Tall coconut palms. The Jamaica Tall was extremely susceptible. The entire coconut industry collapsed. Replanting with Malayan Dwarf and Maypan hybrids has slowly rebuilt the industry, but Jamaica's coconut landscape has never fully recovered.

Is lethal yellowing spreading in Africa?

Yes. Lethal yellowing-type diseases (LYDs) have been devastating in Tanzania (Tanzanian Lethal Disease, killing palms since the 1960s), Mozambique (Cabo Delgado Lethal Yellowing), Ghana, and Nigeria. Different but related phytoplasma strains and vector species are involved. LYDs are considered an emerging threat to Africa's coconut and oil palm industries.
