Why is late planting so risky for rosette disease?

Early-planted groundnut establishes dense canopy cover before aphid populations build up. Late planting means young, vulnerable plants are exposed to peak aphid populations that have already built up on early-planted fields. Late-planted fields also have more gaps (poor emergence) that attract aphid landing. Studies show 2-3 weeks of planting delay can increase rosette incidence from <5% to >50%.

What makes groundnut rosette unique?

It is the only plant disease known to require three separate infectious agents acting together: GRV (the umbravirus), its satellite RNA, and GRAV (the assistor luteovirus). GRV provides the RNA that causes symptoms. The satellite RNA controls symptom type (chlorotic vs green). GRAV packages GRV+satellite into aphid-transmissible particles. Without any one component, the disease complex breaks down.

Can rosette disease spread outside Africa?

Groundnut rosette disease is restricted to sub-Saharan Africa because all three virus components and the specific aphid transmission system evolved together in Africa's wild groundnut populations. While Aphis craccivora occurs worldwide, the virus complex has not been found outside Africa, though biosecurity vigilance is warranted.
