Harvest pods frequently (every 2 weeks minimum) — this is the single most effective practice. Harvest and remove infected pods BEFORE they sporulate.
Remove all diseased pods, mummified pods, and pod husks from the plantation. Bury them at least 30 cm deep.

Black pod disease destroys approximately 20-30% of global cocoa production annually — roughly 700,000-1,000,000 tonnes of cocoa beans. In badly affected West African farms during peak wet season, losses can reach 80-100% of pods if no management is practiced.

Why is Phytophthora megakarya worse than P. palmivora?

P. megakarya produces 3-5 times more zoospores per infected pod than P. palmivora, its lesions spread 2-3 times faster on pods, and it can infect pods at all stages of development. P. palmivora tends to infect mainly young and mature pods. This makes P. megakarya epidemics far more explosive and difficult to control.

Can I save beans from partially infected pods?

If the rot has not yet reached the beans inside, you can harvest the pod immediately, extract the healthy beans, and ferment them normally. Once the rot penetrates to the placenta and beans, the beans develop off-flavors and mold, making them unsaleable. Early and frequent harvesting maximizes bean recovery.
