Diamond-shaped leaf spots
Diamond-shaped or elliptical spots with gray centers and brown margins appear on leaves, similar to rice blast. Spots may have yellow halos.
Neck blast — dark lesion at base of panicle
A dark brown to black lesion develops at the neck (peduncle) just below the panicle. This constricts water and nutrient flow to the developing grain. The neck may shrivel and break.
Finger blast and grain failure
Individual fingers (branches of the panicle) show dark discoloration and fail to fill grain. In severe cases, the entire panicle is blasted, producing no grain. Infected grains are shriveled, dark, and lightweight.
