Early Stage

Mid Stage

Leaf collapse and pseudostem splitting
Leaves progressively yellow and collapse, hanging brown and dead around the pseudostem. Longitudinal splitting of the lower pseudostem may occur. Cut pseudostem shows reddish-brown discoloration of vascular tissue.

Late Stage

Complete plant death
All leaves die. The plant topples or stands as a dead stump. Internal vascular tissue is uniformly dark brown. The corm shows extensive internal discoloration. The plant does not recover.

There is NO effective curative treatment for Panama disease. Infected plants must be destroyed in place.
Destroy infected plants by injecting pseudostem with herbicide and covering with thick plastic to contain spore spread during decomposition.
Apply lime (5-10 t/ha) and organic matter to raise soil pH and promote beneficial soil microbes that suppress Fusarium.
Plant resistant varieties: FHIA-01, FHIA-25, Goldfinger (FHIA-01), or local resistant cultivars.

No fungicide is effective against Fusarium wilt of banana in the field. The fungus resides deep in the vascular system where foliar or soil-applied fungicides cannot reach it.

Research on biological control (Trichoderma, Bacillus, endophytic fungi) shows promise but no commercial solution is yet available.

Without resistant replacement varieties or effective treatment, TR4 could repeat what Race 1 did to Gros Michel — forcing another complete variety shift.

Can infested soil be cleaned or decontaminated?

Not practically. Fusarium chlamydospores survive in soil for 30+ years and are resistant to most soil treatments. Flooding, solarization, and fumigation provide partial reduction but cannot fully eradicate the pathogen. Once soil is infested, it should be considered permanently infested for susceptible banana varieties.
