Common questions about Maize Lethal Necrosis

Can MLN be transmitted through seed?

MCMV (one of the two MLN component viruses) can be seed-transmitted at rates of 0.03-0.33%. While this seems low, in large seed lots it can introduce the virus to new areas. This is why certified, MLN-tested seed is crucial, especially when planting in previously unaffected regions.

Why is MLN so destructive compared to each virus alone?

MLN is caused by synergistic interaction between MCMV and a potyvirus. Each virus alone causes mild symptoms, but co-infection triggers a dramatic amplification — MCMV levels increase 5-10 fold in the presence of the potyvirus, overwhelming the plant's defenses and causing lethal necrosis.

Is there any cure for MLN-infected plants?

No. Like all plant viral diseases, MLN cannot be cured. Once a plant is infected with both viruses, it will deteriorate and die. Management must focus entirely on prevention: clean seed, vector control, resistant varieties, and crop rotation.
