Diamond or elliptical gray-centered spots with brown margins appear on leaves, similar to rice blast. Leaf symptoms alone rarely cause significant damage.

The most devastating symptom: partial or complete bleaching (whitening) of the wheat head above the point of infection on the rachis. The bleached portion produces no viable grain. A dark lesion is visible at the infection node on the rachis.

Grains above the infection point are completely shriveled and empty. If infection occurs at the base of the head, the entire spike is destroyed. Grain contaminated with the pathogen shows poor germination and serves as seed-borne inoculum.

Could wheat blast reach the Indo-Gangetic Plain of India?

This is a major concern. The Indo-Gangetic Plain produces the majority of India's wheat and has climatic conditions (warm, humid spring) suitable for wheat blast. The pathogen reached Bangladesh in 2016 and was detected in Zambia in 2018, demonstrating its ability to jump continents. CIMMYT and Indian authorities are conducting extensive surveillance and pre-emptive resistance breeding.

Why is wheat blast harder to control than rice blast?

Three reasons: (1) Wheat blast primarily attacks the head, and once the head is infected during the brief flowering window, yield loss is immediate and irreversible. (2) Very few sources of effective resistance have been identified — the 2NS translocation is the main one. (3) Fungicide efficacy is limited (50-70% control at best) because the head infection window is narrow and timing must be precise.

Is wheat blast related to rice blast?

Yes — both are caused by Magnaporthe oryzae but by different host-specialized pathotypes. The wheat pathotype (MoT) does not infect rice, and the rice pathotype (MoO) does not infect wheat under normal conditions. However, they share similar biology, and researchers are leveraging decades of rice blast knowledge to accelerate wheat blast solutions.
